Building a balanced college list
How to pick the right mix of Reach, Target, and Safety schools.

A balanced college list is your safety net and your launchpad. Too many reaches and you risk getting shut out. Too many safeties and you might wonder what could have been.
The recommended split
For a list of 8 to 12 schools, aim for 2 to 3 Reach schools where your profile is below the median but admission is not impossible, 3 to 5 Target schools where you are a competitive applicant, and 2 to 3 Safety schools where you comfortably exceed typical admitted profiles.
Every school on your list should be one you would genuinely attend. A safety school you hate is not a real safety.
How Blueprint helps
College Matchmaker categorizes schools automatically based on your profile. Adjust your quiz preferences, like location, major, size, and campus culture, and your matches recalculate until the list feels right.
